KWEKWE – A MAN notorious for sticky fingers in the Midlands is behind bars – after being betrayed by a missing finger.

Maxwell Marufu of Amaveni suburb in Kwekwe robbed the same farm twice – but workers had noticed that he had a finger missing on his left hand.

His luck ran out when a farm worker, John Ajamu, saw a man without a finger at a local bar, and became suspicious.

Police were called and arrested Marufu, who pleaded guilty on Monday to stealing barbed wire, two goats and two sheep.

Margaret Ziyambi, for the state, said Marufu initially stole six rolls of barbed wire, each with a total length of 1,200 meters, from a local farm in the dead of the night.

After his first success, he returned to the farm a second time and stole two sheep and two goats – but alert workers woke up and gave chase, almost catching him in the act.

Marufu abandoned the animals and made safe his escape, but not before the workers had taken note that he was missing a finger on his left hand.

Marufu was found guilty on two counts of theft and sentenced to 205 hours of community service.
