GWERU – Kwekwe-based music outfit, On One, won the 2018 Midlands edition of the Chibuku Road to Fame Provincial finals at Mtapa high density suburb in Gweru over the weekend.

The event was held at Musika Beerhall in Mtapa on Saturday where different music bands from across the province converged to battle it out with only the top three getting prize monies.

On-One, which was unlucky in previous competitions, struck the right chord this time around clinching the ultimate prize.

The group will represent the province at the national finals in Harare next month.

Chibuku Road to Fame, launched in 2001, is a brainchild of Delta Beverages Company and the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe to promote and identify musical talent.

The Midlands outfit hopes to follow in the footstep of last year’s national champions, The Travelers band, also from the Midlands, who took first prize and walked away with $7,000 and a recording deal.

On-One walked away with $500 prize money and will in September be battling it out with nine other musical groups from across the country at the Glamis Arena in the capital.

Second placed at the Midlands finals was Eco-Rhymes band who pocketed $300 while third placed Mopane were given $200 for their efforts.

National Arts Council of Zimbabwe Programs officer, Honour Muvango, thanked all participants and expressed confidence on the winning group wishing them the best in the national finals next month.

“As Midlands we are extremely happy that the event was a great success and we thank all groups that took part at this year’s event.

“Given the sterling performance exhibited by the winning group, I’m quite optimistic that On-One will make it at the National Finals,” Muvango said.
