KADOMA – Thirteen people were killed early Thursday in a road accident involving a Chawasarira bus and a kombi between Kadoma and Kwekwe, on the Harare-Bulawayo highway, police confirmed.

Police, Ambulance and Fire Brigade crews were on the scene within minutes of the accident at around 9AM. They pulled survivors and the dead from the wreckage.

Witnesses described scenes of absolute carnage, and saw 13 bodies being pulled from the kombi.

Police said the kombi was coming from Donain heading to Kadoma, while the bus was heading towards Kwekwe.

Witnesses said the kombi driver had attempted a u-turn in the middle of the road before being rammed into by the speeding bus.

The kombi was lodged at the front of the bus and dragged along for about 72 meters, said Chief Superintendent Garikai Gwangwava of Kadoma police. Some passengers were thrown off the kombi, which was now a shell, and dragged under the bus.

“The bus was over-speeding, but the kombi driver was trying to pull a reckless stunt in the middle of the road. It’s so sad because no-one should die this way,” said witness, Talent Moyo, who was driving behind the bus.

Kadoma district Hospital attended to 31 of the injured, including the bus driver, who lost a limb in the crash.
