HARARE – MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa will stage a ‘thank you’ rally at Huruyadzo Shopping Centre in Chitungwiza on Saturday, his party said on Thursday.
The announcement came as the Bulawayo High Court set aside a police order barring the MDC Alliance from proceeding with its rally which had been scheduled for the Midlands city of Kwekwe last Sunday.
Justice Nokuthula Moyo agreed with the MDC Alliance that there was no lawful basis for blocking the rally, which police had said should not go ahead owing to an outbreak of typhoid in the province.
The judge said the MDC Alliance merely needed to notify the police in line with provisions set out in the Public Order and Security Act. The rally, she added, should be held at a venue that has ablution facilities.
Tabitha Khumalo, the MDC Alliance deputy spokesperson, welcomed Justice Moyo’s ruling.
“Although the ruling is belated, we welcome the judge’s order. We are going to reschedule the rally and advice our supporters when the people’s president will address the rally. President Chamisa won the elections and people are eager to hear the way forward from him,” she said.
Chamisa, who insists he won the presidential vote on July 30 despite the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission declaring a narrow victory for the incumbent, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has refused to concede and says he will ask his supporters about the next steps to take.
On September 15, the MDC Alliance will stage another rally at Gwanzura Stadium to mark the 19th anniversary of the party’s formation, said secretary general Douglas Mwonzora.
