BULAWAYO – A funeral has been held for a Zimbabwean security guard killed for their guns with a colleague in South Africa on October 10.

Boykie Moyo, 46, was shot as he sat in a patrol vehicle with colleague, Eric Ngobese, near Maponya Mall in Soweto, south of Johannesburg. They were deployed as part of a team providing specialised security services for a national financial institution.

A video of the shooting, captured by a dashboard camera of their patrol vehicle, went viral on the internet inducing shock and outrage, but South African police say they are yet to make arrests.

Moyo was laid to rest on Saturday in Sigangatsha village in Kezi, Matabeleland South.

His family has been speaking of their pain at watching his brutal killing on WhatsApp groups.

His sister, Magie Moyo, said: “We had no idea that he had been shot. We were in the dark and found out like everyone else on social media. Most of us first saw the video on WhatsApp chat groups.”

The father of three was an honest, hardworking man who had left Zimbabwe in 2008 to seek a better life in South Africa.

“When he was shot, his wife was in South Africa visiting so you can just imagine how she felt when she heard news of his death. As it is one of our brothers, who is also based in South Africa, could not speak because of the shock of seeing him being killed like that,” she told the Sunday News.

“He left Zimbabwe in 2008. Before that, he had been running our father’s businesses. He found employment very quickly in South Africa.”

Geoff Schapiro of 24/7 Security Services, Moyo’s employers, said they were not responsible for releasing the gruesome video of his killing.

“While this may aid the South African Police Service to identify the criminals faster‚ it has had an emotional toll on the families‚ friends and work colleagues of the deceased reaction officers. Our thoughts are particularly with their wives and children‚” Schapiro said.

The video shows Ngobese and Moyo parked near a built-up residential neighbourhood. Suddenly, Ngobese – who was sitting in the driver’s seat – sees movement on his right side but before he can react a flurry of shots are fired killing him instantly.

One or more bullets appeared to have also caught Moyo, who is still alive however, when the gunman opens the driver’s door. The shooter, who has a distinctive tattoo on his arm, then shoots Moyo again before proceeding to take the two security guards’ guns – the apparent motive for the crime. A second man, also armed, opens Moyo’s passenger side door in the process also revealing his face to the camera.

Police say despite social media speculation that the two killers had been caught, they are still looking for the suspects and are following some leads.
