GWERU – A top Zanu PF official from Midlands province has died after an out-of-control bus landed on top of his car just outside Gweru on the road to Bulawayo.

Goodwill Shiri, the vice chairman of the party in the province, was trapped inside the vehicle and was confirmed dead on the scene when fire fighters finally manage to get to him.

The accident occurred near the Gwenoro turn-off at around 6.30PM on Monday evening.

Shiri, who had a female passenger, was going to his farm. The passenger was transported to Gweru Provincial Hospital, and her condition is unknown.

Witnesses said the bus, bearing the signage ‘Boss Petso’, swerved sharply into oncoming traffic while trying to avoid some donkeys in the road.

The bus, which would have overturned, ended up lodged on top of Shiri’s branded party vehicle, trapping him underneath.

Passengers from the bus tried to free the politician but could not lift the bus. Fire fighters had to cut through his vehicle to reach him, but he was dead.

Cornelius Mupereri, the party’s provincial spokesperson who arrived at the accident scene, said he was in a state of disbelief.

“I’m still in shock, I can’t believe that comrade Shiri is gone. Losing a hardworking cadre under such circumstances is saddening,” he said.
