HARARE – Businessman Genius Kadungure was arrested on Thursday just hours after he was involved in an accident near Domboshava.

Kadungure was grabbed by detectives as he left the Harare Magistrates Court where he is on trial for fraud.

Police spokesman Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told the ZBC that the 34-year-old was being held on tax evasion charges.

Kadungure, who has a gas business, is accused of defrauding the taxman of $22 million.

Nyathi said Kadungure would appear in court on Friday.

In a rough 24-hours for the wealth-flaunting socialite, Kadungure was accused of causing an accident in Domboshava on Wednesday evening.

Witnesses said he had attempted an overtaking manoeuvre in a black Range Rover but crashed into the back of an Isuzu truck which burst a tyre and careered off the road before coming to a stop.

No-one was hurt in the accident. Sources say on top of charging him with causing an accident, police could hit Kadungure with an unrelated charge after questions were raised over the Range Rover’s registration.

The nightclub boss is currently on trial for defrauding Chegutu West MP Dexter Nduna and another man of over R1 million.

He allegedly misrepresented that he was a procurement manager for Marange Resources, a diamond company, and separately tricked the two men into transferring money into the account of a South African company which was purportedly going to supply them equipment they would then sell to the diamond mine for a profit.

It was all a scam, say prosecutors. Kadungure used some of the money to buy wholesale gas, his trial – which continues – has heard.
