HARARE – President Emmerson Mnangagwa is set to embark on what his party says are “thank you” rallies across the country to acknowledge those who voted for him on July 30.

The Zanu PF leader will begin his tour in Mashonaland West on Saturday, according to provincial chairman Ziyambi Ziyambi.

Official results showed Mnangagwa polled 312,958 votes to MDC rival Nelson Chamisa’s 217,732 in the province.

Chamisa has already visited three provinces – Mashonaland East, Mashonaland West and Matabeleland South – for his own “thank you” rallies.

“The President is going to have a rally at Murombedzi Growth Point this Saturday to thank the people for voting overwhelmingly for him and Zanu PF,” Ziyambi told a meeting of the Zanu PF provincial coordinating committee on Monday.

“It’s the first rally and I think he is going to have other such rallies throughout the country. We feel excited, humbled and honoured that he chose to start in Mashonaland West province.”

Mnangagwa’s disputed election win has plunged the country into its worst economic crisis in a decade.

In trying to move the country quickly past the disputed election, Mnangagwa declared that “the time for politics is behind us”, but the fresh round of rallies are evidence the Zanu PF leader feels the heat from Chamisa who says he is mobilising supporters for massive urban demonstrations against the regime.
