HARARE – The Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) is set to launch a 24-hour online news channel, Cabinet heard on Tuesday.

This was revealed by Information, Media and Broadcasting Services minister Monica Mutsvangwa, while briefing reporters at the end of the meeting.

Mutsvangwa said Cabinet had “approved for implementation the establishment of a ZBC Zim24 online news channel.”

She did not provide further details.

The government maintains tight control over the public broadcaster, and revelations that a new ZBC product was discussed in Cabinet will raise eyebrows among media watchers.

Zim24, when launched, would be groundbreaking in many ways, it being the first online TV station out of Zimbabwe and the only 24-hour news channel.
