HARARE – A man who answers to the name of Sex Machine insists names are not all that: he lacks the efficiency his name advertises.

The 31-year-old Marondera man who works as a mechanic has spent all his life being teased about his unusual name.

He owes the name to his father, Paul Machine Mvere.

Whatever the father’s thought process, Sex has not turned out to be the pleasure maniac his father may have envisaged.

He settled early into a marriage before he could explore the full implications of his name.

He told The Standard: “But during my early youth days, everything was possible. Not now, I’m now a mature person. I’m nothing like a sex machine.

“I’m happily married. At first my wife couldn’t believe my name, but she adapted to it. She is Mrs Machine. My father calls me Mike, which is my uncle’s name I have adopted, or Sex depending on where we are and who is around.”

He recounted how he had a torrid time registering for the EcoCash mobile money service.

“The lady serving me couldn’t believe it when she read the name on my ID. I’m happy that she assisted me in the end. I had to remove the ‘e’ from my first name to lessen the awkwardness on clients.”

Clients paying for his services on EcoCash come across the name S*x Machine, after Econet decided to place an asterisk in the middle of his name.

“My father is the best person to explain why he gave me such a name,” says Sex, who went through Tapfuma Primary School and Rukweza High School using his name, which was the source of much amusement whenever the register was marked.
