HARARE – Health Minister Obadiah Moyo on Wednesday ratcheted up his plan to sack Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals acting CEO Dr Noah Madziva by hauling him before a disciplinary hearing.

Moyo was furious after Madziva failed to welcome him to the facility on March 29 when the minister toured with the United Arab Emirates’ assistant minister of health.

Parirenyatwa CEO Thomas Zigora and Harare Hospital CEO Dr Nyasha Masuka have been sacked for the same offence. Madziva, Parirenyatwa’s Clinical Director, is acting CEO.

The minister’s moves against the hospital managers has alarmed specialist senior doctors who have threatened to strike.

Madziva was summoned to appear before “the ministry’s investigation committee… to answer charges of your absence from duty” during the minister’s short-notice visit.

Dr Gibson Mhlanga, the ministry’s director of AIDS and TB, signed the letter as chairman of the committee.

Madziva is said to have told the hearing that he was conducting an operation in theatre, and could not be available for the minister’s tour of the hospital.

Moyo used the visit of the UAE junior minister to ask for medical supplies.
