HARARE – A soldier blew US$263,000 after a bank system error ensured his account maintained its balance. Now, CABS Bank is going after him trying to get its money back.

CABS Bank has asked the High Court in Harare for a garnishee order against 27-year-old Airforce of Zimbabwe officer, Arnold Lethlale Pullen.

CABS’ head of recoveries Collins Chikukwa, in an affidavit before the court, said Pullen would have noticed that every time he withdrew money, his bank account was not debited. New deposits into his account were, however, credited such that his balance grew in a period of five months between May and September 2017.

Chikukwa said Pullen, perhaps to circumvent withdrawal limits, made several transfers to bank accounts held with ZB Bank and Steward Bank from where he withdrew the money and spent it.

CABS only noted the system error in October of the same year and moved to rectify it.

Other than the efforts to get its money back by docking his pay monthly, CABS also filed a criminal complaint against Pullen.

Pullen is cited in court papers as the judgment debtor while Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri and the director of the Salary Service Bureau (SSB) are cited as co-garnishees.
