HARARE – Glen View South MP Vimbai Tsvangirai-Java died on Monday, almost a month after being involved in a deadly car crash in Kwekwe, her MDC party said.

Vimbai, the daughter of MDC founding leader and former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, died at the West End Clinic in Harare, said MDC spokesman Jacob Mafume.

Her death sparked an outpouring of grief on social media, even uniting political fores.

MDC leader Nelson Chamisa described Tsvangirai’s death as a “blow to us all”.

“This comes at a time when the MDC family is yet to fully recover from the passing on of our icon MT. Vimbai was a rising star whose value is without debate,” Chamisa said on Twitter, making reference to the MDC founding leader who died in February last year.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa said he was “very sad” to learn of Vimbai’s death.

Vimbai was elected MDC women’s assembly secretary in absentia last month while she recovered from her injuries from the May 14 accident.

She is the third person to die from the accident, which took the lives of two other party activists.

Mafume said the MDC was “hurting beyond measure.”

“The ways of the Lord are beyond judgement or measure, but this cuts deep to the soul. We need help to understand,” Mafume said.

Her family had previously expressed hope she would pull through from her injuries.
