HARARE – Zanu PF youth league deputy secretary Lewis Matutu said he would name and shame corrupt officials from his party and government on Monday, June 24, despite receiving death threats.

Matutu said he wanted the implicated officials to clear their names, or resign.

“For now, we have to focus on our own people who are in government and in the party so that when our house is clean, we can shout out aloud against those who are sabotaging our country,” Matutu said ahead of his decreed day of reckoning.

Matutu last week revealed that his threat to expose corruption had led to death threats being made against him.

“Since l started firmly denouncing corruption, some comrades in the revolution have come guns blazing against me, however l will not stop until it’s over and those that are also benefiting from corruption be ready for the show,” he said on Twitter.

Zanu PF youth league secretary Pupurai Togarepi defended Matutu on Sunday, telling The Standard newspaper: “It has always been our position to name and shame corrupt individuals and saboteurs. Lewis Matutu is a messenger, don’t fight him. Any further attack on him will invite a firm response from the youth league.

“They crossed the Rubicon line by threatening the deputy secretary. We cannot allow them to vandalise the efforts by President Emmerson Mnangagwa to rebuild Zimbabwe.”

Some in Zanu PF fear the youth league is pursuing a factional agenda to paint internal opponents as corrupt, which Matutu denies.

“We are not afraid, it is time we dealt with this crisis,” he said. “We can’t be threatened by thieves who want to use non-existant factional fights to further their agenda. We’re going to name and shame them.”
