HARARE – Air Zimbabwe says it is not missing any planes, following weekend newspaper reports citing comments by the Auditor General.
The Daily News on Sunday reported that three MA60 planes purchased from China had “vanished into thin air”.
The specific comments relating to the planes by Mildred Chiri, the Auditor General, were that: “The company was using and deriving economic benefits from three MA60 aircraft which were not accounted for in the company’s financial statements.”
Air Zimbabwe corporate services manager and spokesman Tafadzwa Mazonde told ZimLive on Monday that they were not missing any planes.
“It’s poor reportage. The planes are here, anyone is free to come and see them. What is missing are some documents on the planes that speak to their existence at Air Zimbabwe, either by way of Agreement of Sale or Lease Agreement. The aircraft were provided to Air Zimbabwe by the government as part of shareholder support. So, all the necessary paperwork is with the government not Air Zimbabwe, hence the query from the Auditor General,” Mazonde said.
The three MA60 planes have broken down and are currently not flying.
