HARARE – Tourism Minister Prisca Mupfumira was arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) on Thursday, and faces charges over the looting of the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) in her previous role as public service and labour minister.

Mupfumira returned from England this week after going there with three other ministers to watch the Netball World Cup.

ZACC, in a statement, said: “The Minister of Tourism has been taken in, the process is happening now and the commission will be able to make a statement soon.”

It is the first arrest by the re-constituted ZACC which is now chaired by Justice Loice Matanda-Moyo. Eight commissioners of the constitutional body were sworn-in last week, with President Emmerson Mnangagwa saying he had given the new commission “the necessary teeth” including the power of arrest.

Mupfumira features prominently in an audit which exposed NSSA corruption, with millions said to have been looted from the pensions body. The NSSA corruption dragnet may yet see more officials being arrested.

She was recently named on a list of corrupt officials by the Zanu PF Youth League.
