HARARE – President Robert Mugabe wore suits impeccably in his 37 years in power but in forced retirement, the 95-year-old is finally enjoying the liberating joys of sportswear.

Mugabe’s first born son Robert Junior on Friday posted an image of himself and his father in Adidas sportswear on Instagram, as Mugabe lives out his final years in Singapore.

The former Zimbabwe strongman, who was toppled in 2017 when the military rebelled, is seen slumped in a wheelchair, spotting a grey moustache.

Mugabe was seen dressed in the same kind of tracksuit in another picture released on June 1, in which he appeared with his wife, Grace, and Robert Junior. In that first photo, Robert Junior wore a different T-Shirt – suggesting the picture released on Friday was taken on a different date.

The 27-year-old Robert Junior, a basketball player for the Zimbabwe national team, kept with the sports theme in a caption to the latest picture, writing: “Hot boys up 20 in the fourth quarter.”

ZimLive understands Robert Junior has been by his father’s side whenever he can find time.

“Of all Mugabe’s children, he’s the one who has spent the most time with his father. He has been a rock to the former president,” a relative said.

Robert Junior is said to have recorded conversations with his father, something he started before the 2017 coup.

“When Mugabe is no longer with us, and in the absence of his written memoirs, Robert Junior is the guy historians will want to talk to,” the relative added.
