JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – South African superstar Babes Wodumo on Tuesday claimed she had been hacked after incendiary xenophobic comments were posted on her Twitter account.
The Durban-based Wololo singer used her Instagram account to distance herself from the anti-foreigner sentiments expressed on Twitter.
“Guys this is not me,” she said on Instagram, attaching a screen shot of a message she purportedly sent out on Twitter.
“This he/she, mina angisazi lomuntu ufunani (I don’t know what this person wants).”
A series of xenophobic messages were posted on Babes Wodumo’s official Twitter account.
“Nigerians need to leave South Africa!!! Everything would be smooth without them. Engabe akukho kwa iwunga!!,” one of the posts reads.
“I’m not done. Zimbabweans!!! Hambani,” said another.
Another post described white people as “dogs”.
Using her Instagram account, Babes Wodumo – real named Bongekile Simelane – told fans she had reported the “hacking” of her account to Twitter.
Foreign-owned shops were targeted in Johannesburg and Durban on Monday and Tuesday this week in anti-foreigner protests, which authorities maintained are driven by criminal elements intent on plunder.
It is not the first time Babes Wodumo has claimed her Twitter account had been taken over by malignant forces.
After she broke up with her on-and-off boyfriend Mampintsha last year, she claimed he was using her account. They later reconciled after each accused the other of domestic abuse.
