CAPS United 1-1 Herentals

HARARE – CAPS United saw their lead cut to two points at the summit of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League table after being held by Herentals at the National Sports.

Title rivals FC Platinum beat Ngezi Platinum 2-1 in Zvishavane to reduce the deficit with six matches still to be played before the season curtain comes down.

Herentals, who were twice denied by the woodwork against an out-of-sorts United, were ahead shortly after halftime when Blessing Majarira was allowed acres of space to take Juan Mutudza’s pass under his spell before drilling home.

Darlington Dodo’s leaders refused to be overrun and levelled through Dominic Chungwa’s header on 56 minutes.

But by the time Chungwa levelled, relegation-haunted Herentals could have been well out of sight after Carlos Mavhurume and William Kapumha were both denied by the frame of the United goal in a rampant start to the second period.

Chicken Inn were second behind United going into the midweek fixtures but they lost 2-0 on the road to Harare City, leaving them five points off the pace.

At Luveve, Bulawayo Chiefs made a strong case for survival after a 3-1 win over Mushowani Stars lifted them a point clear of the drop zone.

A first-half brace from Francis Darkpata and a second-half strike by Farau Matare handed Chiefs the much-needed three points, in the process pushing Mushowani into the relegation zone.
