HARARE – Zimbabwe’s national football team could be forced to wear an old kit for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier with Botswana on Friday after the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) seized a kit consignment from sponsors, Umbro.
The consignment includes training kits, which the players who went into camp on Monday have not been able to use.
The Herald newspaper reports that Umbro sent the kits on time, but a dispute arose once the kit landed at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport over duties to be paid.
“ZIFA officials have been running around for days now to try and secure the supporting letters to show that, indeed, the kit should come in for free since it’s meant for a national programme given the national team’s matches are national projects,” the newspaper quoted a source as saying.
ZIMRA, meanwhile, is reported to be insisting that ZIFA must pay customs duties on the consignment but the broke association is praying for a waiver.
Zimbabwe play Botswana on Friday and Zambia next week.
