HARARE – Zimbabwe National Students Union leader Takudzwa Ngadziore was denied bail on Thursday following his latest arrest for addressing a news conference which authorities say breached Covid-19 regulations.

Harare magistrate Vongai Muchuchuti ruled that the 22-year-old was likely to re-offend since he allegedly committed the offence while on bail in three other criminal cases.

His co-accused Tapiwanashe Chiriga was however granted Z$5,000 bail.

Ngadziore and Chiriga were arrested after holding a news conference on the steps of the Harare Magistrate’s Court to show solidarity with jailed opposition activist Makomborero Haruzivishe.

Police charged the students with holding a prohibited gathering under Covid-19 regulations.

Meanwhile, Norton MP Temba Mliswa who is also accused of violating Covid-19 regulations after holding a press conference at his Borrowdale home also appeared before the same magistrate.

Through his lawyer Musindo Hungwe, Mliswa challenged his placement on remand.

It is his argument that he is unlawfully before the court, denying that he breached Covid-19 regulations.

Muchuchuti is expected to hand down her ruling on Mliswa’s application next Monday.
