BULAWAYO – Two suspected armed robbers were shot dead early on Saturday in a gun fight with police detectives in Bulawayo’s Fourwinds suburb, witnesses said.

Police only confirmed one death, and the wounding of two other suspects.

Residents of a quiet neighbourhood on Franklin Drive woke up to the sound of gunfire as police battled six armed men.

When the guns fell silent, police took four men into custody and two suspects were dead, a witness told ZimLive.

“The third man who was shot didn’t look too good, I would be surprised if he survives,” the witness said.

The six men, thought to have travelled from South Africa, were allegedly trying to rob a gold dealer when a team from CID Homicide in Bulawayo cornered them.

All six were on the police wanted list.

In a statement, police spokesman Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said: “The ZRP confirms that one armed robber has been shot dead and two injured when six armed robbers who came all the way from South Africa pounced on a house along Franklin Drive, Fourwinds, Bulawayo. Four firearms have been recovered at the scene.”

Bulawayo witnessed 32 armed robberies in a four-month period between March 1 and June 30 this year, according to police.
