HARARE – Police recovered crystal methamphetamine worth Z$1.7 million (about US$15,000) after a high-speed chase in central Harare which led to the arrest of two women and a man, a court heard on Friday.

Kudakwashe Charles Mapara, 25, Gertrude Glenara, 21, and Natasha Gamuchirai Chari, 23, were charged with unlawful dealing in dangerous drugs before Harare magistrate Stanford Mambanje, who remanded them in custody to Monday for their bail ruling.

The court heard that on August 24 this month, detectives from CID Drugs in Harare received information that drug dealers driving in a silver Honda Fit were going to make a delivery of illegal drugs at the NetOne building in central Harare.

Police observed the target vehicle parking at Kaguvi Street which is adjacent to the NetOne building. Glenara was at the wheel and Chari her passenger.

When the detectives moved on the vehicle, Glenara drove off at high speed leading to a chase. Police finally managed to force the Honda Fit to stop at the intersection of Samora Machel and Rekai Tangwera Streets.

Police found four sachets of crystal methamphetamine in the vehicle. Glenara and Chari, the court heard, both implicated Mapara.

Police raided Mapara’s home and he was observed trying to throw away a white substance, it is alleged. Police found two more sachets of the drug and 108 grams of cannabis.

The recovered crystal meth drugs have a street value of Z$1,770,905 while the cannabis has value of Z$9,000.
