BULAWAYO – The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) on Sunday sacked national football team coach Zdravko Logarušić after 20 months in charge.

ZIFA, in a statement, said it had “amicably parted ways” with the Croat who had signed a two-year performance-based deal.

He won just one of 14 matches in charge, and the final straw appears to have been Zimbabwe’s 1-0 defeat away to Ethiopia in a 2022 World Cup qualifier last week.

ZIFA said: “The decision was arrived at upon consideration by the full executive committee of all the various relevant circumstances pertaining to the coach’s contract. The entire technical team has also been disbanded.”

The ZIFA decision means former Zimbabwe captain Benjani Mwaruwari, appointed as one of Logarušić’s assistants only two weeks ago, also finds himself jobless. Tonderayi Ndiraya and Lloyd Chitembwe were the other assistants.

ZIFA said it would appoint an interim coaching team “in due course as the executive committee has already set the process in motion.”

Zimbabwe play Ghana in back-to-back group stage World Cup qualifiers next month.
