KWEKWE – Four men have been arrested after violent confrontations between fans that forced the abandonment of a Sunday league match between Hardrock and Dynamos at Chahwanda Stadium in Kwekwe.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the arrest of Shingirai Chivavare, 34, Matthias Taderera, 43, Tavakuda Nyoni, 46, and Emmanuel Dube, 50, following scenes of chaos that erupted during the match, which had to be called off in the 80th minute.

Police said supporters from both clubs hurled missiles at each other before invading the pitch and engaging in fighting, bringing the match to a premature end.

The two teams were level 1-1 at the time. Tensions boiled over from the Dynamos stand following a hotly disputed penalty to the home side, which resulted in their equaliser.

Seven supporters sustained injuries during the disturbances and were referred to Kwekwe General Hospital, where they are admitted in stable condition.

Stadium infrastructure, including turnstiles and perimeter barricades, was also damaged.

Authorities are investigating how nearly 5,000 fans who could not gain entry to the stadium later forced their way in and allegedly contributed to the violence inside.

The Premier Soccer League, in a statement, said it was awaiting match officials’ reports before making any further determination. Both clubs have been asked to submit written accounts of the events.

The PSL said those found guilty of misconduct would face the full extent of prescribed penalties.

Police spokesman Commissioner Paul Nyathi, urged clubs to enforce seating capacity limits and introduce pre-sold ticketing to prevent stampedes.

The ZRP said it would engage both the PSL administration and the Zimbabwe Football Association to prioritise stadium administration and public safety ahead of future matches.

“The public is warned against engaging in violence, vandalism or any form of public disorder, as offenders will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” Nyathi said.
