HARARE – The country’s busiest bus terminus Mbare Musika has been closed to the public for renovations, the City of Harare said on Monday.
The terminus was temporarily shut down following an outbreak of Covid-19 in March, but it had been re-opened after the government eased the lockdown restrictions allowing inter-city travel.
In a notice, City of Harare advised members of the public that they are to use alternative pick-up points to get long distance buses.
Travellers to Mutare, Mutoko, Murewa and Goromonzi will use Simon Muzenda (formerly 4th street) terminus as pick-up and drop-off points, while those travelling to Bulawayo, Mt Darwin, Bindura, Chiweshe, Shamva and Chinhoyi will use the Coventry Road Holding Bay.
Travellers to Masvingo, Chiredzi and Beitbridge will utilise the Mbudzi Complex Car Park and Machipisa terminus.
“The city implores travellers and bus operators to comply and take due care so as to maintain orderliness and the safety of the travelling public,” read the notice.
Harare spokesperson Michael Chideme said the timeframe for the renovations had not been determined yet.
“We don’t know yet how long it will take to renovate the area, but we are going to give a facelift to Mbare Musika which includes upgrading the shades, ablution facilities and making the place a modern one,” Chideme told ZimLive.
“People will have to bear with us during this time, but the renovations will benefit the people in the long run.”
