HARARE – At least 148 people were killed in 2,723 recorded road traffic accidents which occurred throughout the country between December 15, 2022 and January 15 this year, police said on Monday.
According to police statistics, the number of fatalities is higher than the 138 deaths recorded during the same period between 2021 and 2022.
In a statement on Monday, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said 669 people were also injured, up from 647 during the comparable period.
Nyathi urged drivers to exercise caution along the roads.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police implores drivers to be always cautious on the roads and strive to set an appropriate conduct on safety standards to safeguard lives.
“Above all, the motoring public is implored to exercise extreme caution on the roads during this rainy season as some roads are slippery and in bad state. Motorists should not cross flooded rivers and bridges to curb drowning incidences,” he said.
Nyathi urged public service vehicle operators to adhere to speed limits on the country’s roads and stop engaging in highway races while competing for passengers.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police will continue to enforce road rules and regulations without fear or favour,” he said.
Last week, one person was killed while over 20 others were injured when a Rimbi Tours bus was involved in a road traffic accident with another vehicle after the driver was caught up in a race with a Zebra Kiss bus along the Harare-Nyamapanda Road.
The race was recorded by phone in a viral video.
Government however responded by suspending operating licences of the two bus companies for allegedly flouting road traffic rules.
