BULAWAYO – A seven-year-old boy was killed on Sunday after a racing car burst a tyre and ploughed into spectators at the Bulawayo Motorsport Park, police said.

Kelvin Kwangwari, of Lorraine Road in Sauerstown, was watching a race at the racing circuit in Richmond suburb on the Victoria Falls Road at around 8AM when one of the cars burst a tyre and went off the circuit.

“The vehicle hit the victim who was a spectator and dragged him for a short distance before coming to a stop,” said Chief Inspector Precious Simango of Bulawayo police.

“The victim was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital but died after admission. The incident is under investigation.”

The racing circuit which hosts sprint and endurance races for motorbikes and racing cars is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
