HARARE – Dynamos were Sunday crowned 2023 Chibuku Super Cup champions after beating Ngezi Platinum 2-0 at Baobab to end a nine-year major cup drought and also mark a return to continental football.

Two second half goals by Elton Chikona and Emmanuel Paga ensured the former premiership champions salvaged a season that had been full of promise but petered out when they gave up the league championship race.

It was the first time the Harare giants have won the Chibuku Cup after many attempts past few years.

The cup triumph earned the popular club a spot in the CAF Confederation Cup in 2024.

The competition is for African teams that would have clinched their domestic league’s richest knockout tournaments.

By beating Ngezi Platinum, Genesis Mangombe’s men also denied the newly crowned premiership champions a dream double in a season they had a menacing display.

“Thumbs up to the boys who played. They had a spirited effort,” Mangombe said in a post-match interview.

“They played according to strategy and they had the fighting spirit. They wanted to prove to the world they can do it.

“We said it’s a cup game. The plan was to play it simple and get the chances.”

Dynamos chief executive Jonathan Mashingaidze confirmed the club was ready to play in the CAF Confederation Cup next year.
