HARARE – A musician who rose to fame after composing a praise song for President Emmerson Mnangagwa was charged with rape on Wednesday.

Admire Sanyanga, 32, was hauled before Harare magistrate, Rumbidzai Mugwagwa who advised him to apply for bail at the High Court.

Sanyanga allegedly raped an 18-year-old housemaid who was employed at a Waterfalls home where he was receiving spiritual healing.

Known as Chief Shumbs, the ‘ED Pfee’ singer pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The incident allegedly occurred on July 30, 2019, at around 1PM.

It is alleged that Sanyanga asked the complainant to assist him carry his luggage from the house where he was receiving spiritual healing to his home and she agreed.

“When they arrived at Sanyanga’s flat, the complainant stood outside the door,” according to the charges.

The court heard Sanyanga invited her inside but she refused.

It is alleged that Sanyanga said he only wanted to give the woman oranges but still, she refused.

The court heard that Sanyanga then dragged the complainant inside the apartment while threatening her with violence.

He allegedly locked the door and put the keys inside his pockets, undressed the complainant and raped her once.

“After the rape, the accused warned the complainant from reporting the matter. The complainant returned home but did not reveal her ordeal to anyone. However, she diarised the incident and hid the diary in her bedroom. The matter came to light when her employer came across the diary and went through it. Her boss accompanied her to the police station where she reported the matter,” prosecutors say.
