HARARE – James Chidhakwa, the former Mabvuku Tarafa MP was abducted, tortured and then dumped in Acturus on Monday night, the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) said.

“Chidhakwa was abducted, tortured, injected with an unknown substance, and subsequently dumped in Acturus at midnight by suspected state agents,” the CCC said in a statement.

“His dreadlocks were shaved off using a sharp object. He is currently at a local hospital. The regime in Harare continues to unleash violence and launch attacks against our members. This behaviour must stop.

“The regime in Harare is aware that it did not win the recently concluded flawed, sham, disorganised, and shambolic elections. That is why it is behaving like a terrorist organisation, abducting and torturing our innocent members. We condemn this behaviour in the strongest terms.”

The statement did not say where Chidhakwa, a one-term MP in Mabvuku Tafara between 2018 and 2023, was abducted or provide a description of his kidnappers.

Rights groups have documented dozens of abductions in Zimbabwe over the last two years, a tactic they say is used by state security agents to stop the main opposition party and unionists from organising.

The government routinely dismisses the complaints, instead accusing the activists of staging the abductions
