BULAWAYO — Highlanders on Monday announced the signing of Benjani Jnr Amon Mwaruwari, son of their current coach Benjani Mwaruwari.
The 21-year-old winger was playing non-league football in England, where his famous father played for Portsmouth, Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers.
“Welcome to Highlanders Football Club. We wish you every success in the famous Black and White,” the club said in a video announcement of the signing.
The player is understood to have been training with Highlanders for several weeks and convinced the coaching staff that he has what it takes in Zimbabwe’s top flight.
Highlanders are reportedly broke and unable to spend on new players. Club chiefs have warned of an “uncertain future due to the unavailability of reliable funding.”
Financial statements presented by executive member for finance Nkani Khoza at the club’s extraordinary general meeting on Sunday showed liabilities of US$1,043,456 against assets worth US$618,478.
Khoza warned: “Presently, there are no sponsors and the donors make their donations when we are already in arrears.
“From the financial statements, it is clear that technically the club is unable to settle its obligations hence its future as a going concern is under serious threat.”
Highlanders are seventh in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League after 23 matches, 12 points adrift of leaders Scottland.
Their 1-0 weekend victory over Scottland will encourage Mwaruwari, who would be hoping to narrow the gap to the leaders in the 11 remaining matches.
Highlanders play away at ZPC Kariba on Wednesday. A win could potentially lift them to fourth.
