KADOMA – The wife of a jailed MDC councillor won a by-election to hold on to his seat in Kadoma on Saturday.

Svorai Chiwara was declared the winner of the ward 2 by-election with 782 votes as she defeated Zanu PF’s Lloyd Nyambo who polled 381 votes.

There were eight spoilt ballot papers.

Chiwara’s husband, Michael Gore, was jailed for four years in February after being convicted of participating in the torching of Zanu PF offices in Kadoma during fuel riots in January.

Gore maintained during his trial that he was attending a funeral at the time he is accused of having led about 20 others to burn down Zanu PF offices.

Chiwara is the fifth female councillor in the MDC-dominated 17-member Kadoma council.
