RUSAPE – Gun-toting former police detective Jaison Muvevi, wanted for shooting and killing three people in Wedza last week, evaded arrest in Rusape Saturday after being involved in another dramatic shootout with police.
Muvhevhi is being sought for killing a self-styled Johanne Masowe apostolic sect prophet identified as Crispen Mubvana before turning the lethal weapon on the Officer in Charge Wedza police and a third victim, a bartender at Mukamba Business Centre.
He also shot and critically injured another police officer who, together with the slain station commander, had attempted to react to the shooting of the prophet.
A virtually unknown individual until his shock shooting rampage, Muvevi was tracked down to Chiduku, an area near Rusape where he was involved in a fierce exchange of fire with his former colleagues.
He eluded the police and fled on foot to a nearby mountain, abandoning his vehicle and the gun he had seized from the Wedza police officers who had attempted the first arrest on him Friday.
Police are yet to establish the motive behind the shock killings by the ex-detective.
National police spokesperson Paul Nyathi confirmed the latest attempt to arrest Muvevi in Rusape while also dismissing social media claims he had been arrested.
“He is not yet arrested. The suspect fled and left his vehicle and a gun he had taken from the officers.
“He was located in Chiduku. It is not true that he has been arrested,” Nyathi said.
Following the killing of three people Friday, Muvevi escaped in a white Toyota Allion vehicle after engaging in a shootout with a team of officers attempting to apprehend him.
He drove towards a place called Goto.
