HARARE – The trial of Harare West MP Joanna Mamombe and five other Citizens Coalition for Change activists for breaches of Covid-19 regulations will get underway on April 21.

Mamombe, 28, is jointly charged with Cecilia Chimbiri, Obey Sithole, Netsai Marova, Stanely Manyenga and Makomborero Haruzivishe.

The six are accused of staging an anti-government protest in Harare’s Warren Park suburb on May 13, 2020, when public gatherings were banned in efforts to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

The activists appeared before Harare magistrate Stanford Mambanje on Tuesday and were the prosecution led by Michael Reza informed them of their trial date.

Mamombe, Marova and Chimbiri face a separate trial relating to the same arrest for allegedly publishing falsehoods. The trial is continuing this Thursday.

The three women disappeared following their arrest and were found beaten and tortured on May 15. Police accused them of fabricating the torture accounts, which they deny.
