JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – Two men who shot dead two security guards before robbing them of their guns in Soweto, south of Johannesburg, have been killed in a firefight with police in Durban.

Mbuyiselo Mthonti, 26, and Lindokuhle Cebekhulu, 24, were tracked down by the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit before being cornered in a shack in the Claremont area, west of Durban in the KwaZulu Natal Province.

They were shot and killed when they resisted arrest, police said.

Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said: “When police tried to arrest the two suspects‚ they resisted‚ which resulted in both suspects being shot dead. There are no reports of any police officers being injured at this stage.”

He said the raid took place on Monday and involved several police units.

The men were being sought after Zimbabwean national Boykie Moyo, 46, was shot as he sat in a patrol vehicle with colleague, Eric Ngobese, near Maponya Mall in Soweto on October 10.

The two guards from 24/7 Security Services had been deployed as part of a team providing specialised security services for a national financial institution.

A video of the shooting, captured by a dashboard camera of their patrol vehicle, went viral on the internet inducing shock and outrage.

The video shows Ngobese and Moyo parked near a built-up residential neighbourhood. Suddenly, Ngobese – who was sitting in the driver’s seat – sees movement on his right side but before he can react a flurry of shots are fired killing him instantly.

One or more bullets appeared to have also caught Moyo, who is still alive however, when the gunman opens the driver’s door. The shooter, who has a distinctive tattoo on his arm, then shoots Moyo again before proceeding to take the two security guards’ guns – the apparent motive for the crime

A second man, also armed, opens Moyo’s passenger side door in the process also revealing his face to the camera.

Moyo was laid to rest last Saturday in Sigangatsha village in Kezi, Matabeleland South.

The father of three was an honest, hardworking man who had left Zimbabwe in 2008 to seek a better life in South Africa, his family said.
