HARARE – MDC Alliance youth leader Tererai Obey Sithole was arrested on fresh charges as he left court on Monday.

Sithole’s lawyer Obey Shava said police were preparing to charge the 24-year-old with participating in an unsanctioned flash demonstration on April 1.

“I haven’t yet seen the charge sheet, but indications are that they want to charge him with participating in an illegal demonstration,” Shava said.

Sithole had just left court where he was further remanded on a separate charge of allegedly holding an illegal demonstration in Warren Park in May last year. In that case, he is jointly charged with Harare West MP Joana Mamombe and activists Netsai Marova, Cecilia Chimbiri, Lovejoy Chitengu and Stanley Manyenga.

“I have just been arrested on my way out of court. I’m yet to be advised of my charge. I remain unshaken, till freedom!” Sithole tweeted just after midday on Monday.

The MDC Alliance accuses President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s regime of using the Covid-19 lockdown as an excuse to clamp down on his critics. MDC Alliance leaders are routinely arrested accused of breaching Covid-19 regulations prohibiting gatherings.
