GWERU – Police in Gweru have charged a miner with murder after two of his workers were tied to trees and tortured over two days, before one finally died from his injuries.

Willard Mugadza, popularly known as ‘Dread’, will also face charges of kidnapping, said Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende of Midlands police.

Police are also expected to charge several individuals who participated in abducting Fabian Mabhugu and Lenny Hwehwe on February 25.

The two men who were accused of stealing 70 grammes of gold at Mugadza’s mine in Shurugwi, were rescued by police on Thursday last week before 24-yer-old Mabhugu died in hospital on Sunday.

Hwehwe, 25, has given police a statement detailing how they were abducted on Mugadza’s orders and driven to Chirumhanzu where they were tortured over two days by his enforcers who were demanding to know where they allegedly hid the gold.

“I can confirm the arrest of Willard Mugadza of Gweru in connection with the murder of one Fabian Mabhugu and abduction of one Lenny Hwehwe. Mugadza hired some people who kidnapped and tied both men to trees while assaulting them,” Mukwende said.
