HARARE – Zimbabwe journalist Cost Nkomo, who was reported missing since New Year’s Day, has emerged in one piece and apologized to family and colleagues saying he had gone for prayers in the mountains.

Nkomo quietly vanished on Friday, prompting a desperate hunt by fellow journalists and human rights activists who feared for his life.

Colleagues went on to search hospitals and police stations and mounted a social media campaign appealing for information on his whereabouts.

But the New Zimbabwe journalist – described by his employer as a “sober character” – emerged in good health to the relief of many people on Monday, and explained that he had ventured into the mountains for a spiritual connection.

“I apologize for my unannounced absence for the past three days,” Nkomo said in a statement.

“I took a personal and religious decision to leave home on Friday morning 0700hrs for a traditional annual prayer retreat in Bindura mountain.

“I failed on my part when I did not communicate my whereabouts. I underestimated the impact this will cause. Upon my return home today in the morning I realized that I acted irresponsibly given the nature of my profession.

“I have reflected on the strain and stress this has caused. I, therefore, tender my humble apology to everyone who has been affected by this uncalled behavior,” Nkomo said.

He expressed gratitude and remorse to concerned colleagues saying “may the love you showed in searching for me not be erased by my mistake when a true victim goes missing one day.”

“Personally, I suffered no harm before and during my absence. It was purely a personal decision to satisfy my own spiritual needs,” he added.
