HARARE – Police have launched an investigation after a self-styled prophet and Zanu PF activist posed for a picture wearing a police hat.

The undated picture, a selfie, circulated on social media this week. It shows Zanu PF activist Panganai Java sitting in a car wearing a hat similar to the ones for female police officers. A female police officer without her hat on smiles to the camera whilst standing outside the vehicle.

In a statement on Thursday, police spokesman Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said: “The Zimbabwe Republic Police has taken note of a photo circulating on social media in which a female police officer is seen standing next to a man wearing a police hat.

“Investigations are underway and a detailed statement will be issued after completion of investigations.”

The statement did not name Java, a supporter of President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Java’s followers believe he has the gift of prophecy and refer to him with his adopted name of Passion Java.

In 2019, comedians Samantha ‘Gonyeti’ Kureya and Sharon ‘Maggie’ Chideu were charged with criminal nuisance and fined $20 each after dressing up as police officers for a skit.
