BULAWAYO – Acting Mpilo Central Hospital CEO Dr Solwayo Ngwenya has been awarded a professorship for his research, teaching and leadership qualities.
The University of Science and Technology (NUST) has awarded Ngwenya the title of Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology with retrospective effect from April 1, 2020.
Professor Ngwenya said on Wednesday: “It’s a proud moment for me and my family. I’ve dedicated many years of hard work researching into and practically trying to improve maternal health in a low resource setting at Mpilo, and it’s satisfying to have this body of work recognised.”
Professor Ngwenya is a fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in the United Kingdom and also a lecturer at the NUST Medical School. He is a PhD candidate with NUST.
He grew up in the rustic surroundings of Lupane before enrolling at the University of Zimbabwe to study medicine. He graduated in 1997 and worked as a junior doctor at the United Bulawayo Hospitals and Mpilo for three years before leaving for England in 2000 where he pursued several courses in the field of gynaecology, his chosen specialty.
He returned to Mpilo in 2006, beginning a second spell at one of the country’s biggest referral hospitals which would culminate in his appointment as the hospital’s Clinical Director in 2016.
Professor Ngwenya was appointed Mpilo’s acting CEO in April.
The 49-year-old founded the 30-bed Royal Women’s Clinic in Bulawayo’s Hillside suburb which opened in 2012.
