BULAWAYO – A system fault has halted the issuance of birth and death certificates, Registrar General Henry Machiri said on Monday.

The issuance of passports and National Identity Documents (IDs) remains unaffected, he added.

In a statement, Machiri did not say when the problem is going to be rectified.

“The department will be providing regular updates on the progress being made towards resolving this challenge,” he said.

Workers at the Bulawayo registry said the problem was countrywide.

“Our systems have been down for the past four to five weeks in the whole country. We’re not sure what the problem is and when it’s going to be rectified,” said one employee, who added that they were still issuing the documents manually, but in limited cases.

In September, the registry department suspended the issuing of e-passports and other vital identity documents due to a technical fault.

“The ministry of home affairs is working on a permanent solution to these intermittent system challenges,” said Machiri.
