HARARE – Four people, two of them Zimbabwe National Army officers, drowned in Lake Kariba on Saturday when a dinkey boat they were in capsized, police said.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the bodies of the four drowning victims have since been retrieved.

The small boat capsized near Tsetse Island last Saturday at about 12.30PM.

“The victims were positively identified by their next of kin as follows: Seargent Tatenda Nekati (36) of Zimbabwe National Army, Corporal Nxobile Ncube of Zimbabwe National Army, Trust Phiri (24) of Chilimba village Negande, Kariba and Adson Mupiringano (40) of Batonga,” Nyathi said.

The bodies of the victims were recovered on Sunday and Monday, before being conveyed to Kariba District Hospital mortuary for postmortem.

“Police urge the public to be safety-conscious when using dinkey boats,” Nyathi said.

In 2021, five people died after a boat carrying eight people capsized on its way from Nyaodza to Lake Harvest habour.
