LUSAKA, Zambia – A second Zambian minister tested positive for the coronavirus on Wednesday, as infections in the southern African country breached the thousand mark for the first time.

Simon Miti, Zambia’s Cabinet secretary, told a news conference in Lusaka that Chitalu Chilufya, the health minister, was stable and in isolation after testing positive for the lung illness which causes the disease, Covid-19.

Last Saturday, it was announced that information minister Dora Siliya had contracted the virus.

Zambia recorded 208 new Covid-19 cases out of 903 tests conducted in the last 24 hours, the health ministry said in a statement.

In total, it added, the African nation has registered 1,057 infections along with seven virus-linked deaths and 779 recoveries.
