HARARE – A parent who stormed a rugby pitch brandishing a gun at the conclusion of a match has been named as Lotshe Yuri Rodgers Mangena, the son of the late independence war hero Alfred Nikita Mangena.

Mangena, 50, was arrested following the June 13 incident at Eaglesvale College who were hosting Christian Brothers College (CBC) from Bulawayo. Mangena has a son at CBC.

In a statement on Tuesday, police said the gun had been seized.

National police spokesman Commissioner Paul Nyathi said Mangena had been charged with assault and pointing a firearm.

“The suspect has since appeared before Harare Magistrate Court,” Nyathi said.

Ugly scenes were witnessed after Eaglesvale won the match 14-13.

Videos showed parents running onto the pitch before clashes that led to the assault allegations.
