BUHERA – Nine people drowned early Friday morning when a commuter omnibus rolled into Ruti Dam in Buhera, Manicaland province, after apparently losing its brakes while loading passengers.
The kombi was carrying 12 people and goods when it began moving on its own while stationary, according to Manicaland provincial civil protection committee chairman John Misi.
The driver was outside loading luggage at the time and was not among those swept into the water.
Three of the 12 people on board managed to swim to safety, while the remaining nine drowned.
“Twelve people were on board. Nine drowned and three managed to escape. The nine bodies were taken to Murambinda Mission Hospital for post-mortem,” said Misi.
