HARARE – A Roman Catholic priest who was reported missing for several days in Harare last month died after being struck by a car in the early hours of August 29, police have said.
Police have charged a 22-year-old driver with culpable homicide following the death of Father Regis Chikuni.
Chikuni, 58, was hit by a Honda Fit at the intersection of Prince Edward Road and Samora Machel Avenue at about 2.40AM.
Police said the priest was attempting to cross the road when he was struck by the speeding vehicle. He suffered severe head injuries and fractures to both legs and died at the scene.
Chikuni was not carrying any identification documents and his body was taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital, where it remained unclaimed until September 9.
He was positively identified by a fellow priest, Father Prince Murungweni.
Police have charged Sean Gamu Makoni with culpable homicide in connection with Chikuni’s death.
The Honda Fit sustained damage to its front bumper, left headlamp, bonnet and windscreen. It was later taken to the Vehicle Inspection Department in Eastlea for examination.
Chikuni was last seen by his colleagues at about 5PM on August 27.
