HARARE – Former Citizens Coalition for Change leader Nelson Chamisa on Tuesday said his X account had been “hacked and compromised by cybercriminals” after a post advertising a cryptocurrency called God Is In It or $GIT.
The post appeared just after 3AM CAT but was deleted just before 5AM.
Writing on his WhatsApp channel, Chamisa said he was making efforts to “regain control” of the account, raising questions over who deleted the post if he was not in control of it.
He wrote: “To my fellow citizens, I wish to kindly inform you that my X (formerly Twitter) account has been hacked and compromised by cybercriminals. Our cybersecurity team is working diligently with X support team to fix this problem, regain control and implement remedial measures. We will keep you updated on the status of the account recovery and any actions being taken.~nc.”
The X post was accompanied by two videos of Chamisa allegedly speaking while wearing a nightgown, and carrying a piece of paper written $GIT.
While some Twitter users suggested that the video was AI generated, one “investor” claimed to have bought a token for $500 as the crypto appeared to be sitting at a 48,000 market cap.
“Dear @nelsonchamisa: If you are going to come up with ‘your account was hacked’ it’s a load of nonsense. There is not a single picture of you on the internet in a gown or doing a video in a gown. I want my $500 I aped back,” wrote Jahman Adamski.
