HARARE – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has proclaimed a date for by-elections in Mangwe and Glen View South to replace dead Members of Parliament.
Obedingwa Mguni, the Zanu PF MP for Mangwe, and Vimbai Tsvangirai, the MDC’s representative in the Harare constituency, both died in June.
Mguni collapsed suddenly in parliament and later died in hospital, while Tsvangirai was involved in a car accident and died days later.
In a proclamation issued on Monday, Mnangagwa said the nomination court would sit on July 26, with elections in both constituencies slated for September 7.
Mguni was voted in with a decent majority last year, polling 7,744 vote to beat his closest challenger, Vincent Sihlabo of the MDC Alliance, who registered 4,436 votes.
Elexio Nyathi of the MDC-T received 1,335 votes, trailed by Matthew Sibanda of ZAPU (812) and Nketha Mangoye-Dlamini of ANSA with 639 votes.
Tsvangirai had an emphatic majority in Glen View South with 9,942 votes, beating closest challengers Grandmore Hakata with 3,315 votes and Zanu PF’s Dumisani Chipango who managed 3,248 votes.
