HARARE – A nephew of President Emmerson Mnangagwa appeared before Harare magistrate Jesse Kufa on Monday facing a charge of aggravated indecent assault involving his five-year-old relative and was granted US$100 bail.
The 23-year-old, who is the son of one of the president’s brothers, is accused of committing the offence at a family home in Harare, between April 21 and May 13 this year.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority, the victim had been staying with his paternal relatives during the school holidays.
Prosecutors allege that the accused “unlawfully and intentionally inserted a knife inside the anus” of the child.
The prosecution alleges the incident only came to light after the boy returned to his mother’s home following the school holidays. His mother reportedly noticed that he was unable to sit comfortably and questioned him about his condition.
The child, the court heard, then disclosed that his uncle, whose name is being withheld to protect the victim, had assaulted him.
Police were called.
“The accused person had no right whatsoever to act in the manner that he did,” the prosecution states.
Prosecutors say the child was medically examined and that the medical report will be produced as evidence during trial.
Magistrate Jesse Kufa granted the man US$100 bail and remanded the matter to a later date for routine proceedings.
